The Late Season

Late Season at Snowwater

Why would you ski in the Kootenays in mid March - early April?

Many people prefer to select late March as their favorite time to come. Coverage is at an all-time high at this time of year and we can feel pretty good about skiing most places by then. Mid to late March can be hit with big snowstorms, or conversely sunny bluebird skies, perfect for heli skiing. You’d be surprised as there is usually still plenty of new snow right up to the end of the season, but the warmer than average temperatures may mean that you need to stay a little higher for the best conditions. A more stable snowpack is usual for the end of the season, and if you are looking to ski the steeps then this is certainly the best time to go.

End-of-season heli skiing is perfect for those looking to ski above the tree line in the wide, open slopes of powder that are begging to be skied!   In April, you might be lucky enough to ski some corn snow (spring snow) on the south facing slopes, but you’ve always got the helicopter to whisk you up to the northerly slopes, which should still have some cold powder for you to ski.

The average temperature for March still stays cold enough to keep great quality snow, and in fact, there can be big snowfalls still at this time of year. The snowfalls tend to be intense, but move through quicker than the systems that lock in during December. With more sunny days and base layer of snow almost 300 cm mid April, you have long glorious days.

It’s a tough decision, but skiing with us any time of year is a great time to come.

We hope to see you out there!
